Hoagland, Burl H. -- Mansfield---Services for Burl H. Hoagland, 81, of Mansfield will be held Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors by the Rev. Dr. Betty Sykes, pastor of the East Hills Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Mansfield Cemetery. Calling hours are tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home. Mr. Hoagland died Monday afternoon in Mansfield General Hospital after a three month illness. He was born Dec. 21, 1904, in Brinkhaven and had lived in Mansfield most of his life. Mr. Hoagland was a retired, 44 year employee of the Mansfield Tire and Rubber Co. Surviving are his wife, Esther Zerby Hoagland; and two sisters, Sadie Cline of Mt. Hockensmith, Cecil -- Graveside service for Cecil Hockensmith will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Olivesburg, with the Rev. Michael Mack officiating. Friends may call 30 minutes prior to the service at the cemetery. Heyl Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Hockensmith,81, of 4960 Ohio 545, Ashland, died unexpectedly Saturday at his residence. He was born June 7, 1914, near Olivesburg, the son of Alonzo and Hartensy Warrick Hockensmith. He had been a resident of Olivesburg all of his life. He was a retired factory worker, serving 43 years with Westinghouse in Mansfield. He served in the US Army. Hodges, Horace -- Mr. Horace T. Hodges, an aged and very highly esteemed citizen of Cass Township, died at his home west of town on Saturday, March 12, 1898 aged about 87 years. Mr. Hodges had been in poor health for some time past, but old age was the real cause of his death. The funeral services were at the house on Monday, Rev. Dr. A. C. Miller officiating. Hodges, Josiah -- In Peru, Huron Co., Ohio at his residence, Mr. Josiah Hodges, in the 80th year of his age. Oct. 22nd, 1850. He was born in the eastern part of New York and was an early settler of the western part of, where he passed through privation and hardships which attend the pioneer. It was there he had 8 children born to him, from there he removed to Upper Canada; lived there a few years, then he removed to Ohio, where he spent the last of his time with a second companion, having buried his first in Canada a few years ago. He had 52 grand children, and 46 great grand children, to whom he was much attached, and they have much to esteem and venerate him for. He was quite active and preserving in the business of life, and left the world in affectionate regard of his numerous progeny. He expressed a perfect preparation and willingness to exchange worlds, and to enter upon a higher and holy life, where change shall never come." Submitted by hodgessj. Hodges, Nathaniel -- DIED -- On Friday morning, March 26th., 1869, Mr. Nathaniel Hodges, in the 82d. year of his age. He served in the war of 1812, was engaged in and gave his active support to all measures of progress and reform -- and was universally respected and beloved. He was a member of the M.E. Church and died in the full enjoyment of a hope of everlasting life in Christ Jesus his Lord, and Master. "Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord." May our latter end be like his. Hoff, Abraham -- Died, on July 7th., 1893, Abraham Hoff, in his 60th. year. Funeral services were held at the Salem Lutheran church, Sunday forenoon. The deceased was a respected resident of this community in which he has resided all his long and useful life. He was a member of good standing in the Salem Lutheran church for 40 years, and leaves a widow to mourn his loss, no children having blessed their happy union. Hoffer, Ann Catherine (Leiter) -- Mrs. Ann Catherine Hoffer, widow of the late Isaac B. Hoffman, died Tuesday at the home of Mrs. H.E. King, Chicago, Ill., after an illness of about four weeks. Mrs. Hoffer was born Mary 19, 1827 in this city and was the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Jacob Leiter, pioneer residents of Mansfield. She was united in marriage in 1858 to Isaac B. Hoffer of this city. They resided here until about 22 years ago when they moved to Tacoma, Wash. Her husband died on April 16, 1897 at Tacoma and then she made her home among her children. She is survived by three sons, Joseph F. and Isaac Brainard Hoffer of this city and Dr. James J. Hoffer of Chicago and three daughters, Mrs. Fannie Dantrick of Seattle, Wash., Mrs. H.E. King of Chicago, Ill., and Mrs. Catherine Knapp of Spokane, Wash., and two brothers, S.B. Leiter and Luther Leiter of this city, and six grandchildren. Hoffer, Isaac B. -- Isaac B. Hoffer died at his residence, North L Street, Tacoma, Wash., Friday, April 16. Mr. Hoffer was formerly a well known citizen of Mansfield. He was born in Carlisle, Pa., in 1833, and drove through in a wagon to Mansfield in 1852 with Ephraim Bittner. He removed to Tacoma eight years ago. He has been engaged there four years as court bailiff under Judge Pritchard. Mr. Hoffer was married to Kate Leiter, daughter of Jacob Leiter, in 1858. He leaves a wife and seven children. The latter are Mrs. A.S. Dantrick, James and Kittie Hoffer, of Tacoma; Brink Hoffer, of Rondsburg, gold mines, Cal.; Mrs. H.E. King, of Chicago, and Brainard and Joe F. Hoffer, of this city. The deceased had been sick with heart trouble since Jan. 7. The interment occurred at Tacoma, Wash., today. Mr. Hoffer's many friends in this city will be sorrty to hear of his demise. Mrs. Elizabeth Hoffman, aged 87 years, 9 months and 9 days, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Bellsfield, corner of North East Diamond and Bloom streets, at 4 o'clock this morning. Mrs. Hoffman had been in comparatively good health and her death is attributed to old age. The deceased leaves a family of 4 grown up children, three sons and a daughter. She was a member of the Believers in Christ church. The funeral will take place from the residence on Thursday. S. Hoffman, Elizabeth Lindsay -- LEXINGTON -- Mrs. Elizabeth Lindsay Hoffman, wife of John Hoffman, passed away at her home, Frederick street, Thursday, January 12, at 6:00 p.m. She leaves her husband, one brother, Frank Lindsay; two sisters, Mrs. Frankenberger, of Mansfield, and one sister in Indiana. She was a faithful member of the Christian church. Rev. C.H. Secrist conducted the services at the church Saturday afternoon at 2:00. Hoffman, Thomas L. -- Mansfield. Thomas L. Hoffman, 34, of Monahan, Texas, died Saturday at Monahan after suffering a heart attack. He was born Sept. 17, 1949, in Mansfield. He is survived by his wife, Susan Gatton Hoffman; three sons, Gifford, Tyrell and Cheyenne, and two daughters, Renia and Doucley, all in Monahan; his mother, Evadine Hoffman; a brother, Albert; a sister, Cheryl; and his grandfather, Albert F. Hofman, May -- The many friends of Miss May Hoffman, daughter of Otis Hofman and wife, were shocked to learn of her sudden death at her home on Newman Street, at 8 o'clock yesterday morning. Miss Hofman had been afflicted with heart disease for a number of years, and the least excitement affected her greatly. Miss Hofman was converted during the Chapman meetings and expressed a desire to unite with the First English Lutheran church and last Thursday was baptized by Dr. Wiles. She had arranged to unite with the congregation yesterday, and was preparing to attend church at the time of her death. She grew somewhat excited and went from the kitchen to the dining-room, where she sat down. Without any warning other than a groan, she fell to the floor and when her father picked her up she was dead. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. H.L. Hofman, Sarah Jane -- The body of Mrs. Sarah Hofman, who died at her home in Waynesboro, Pa., the first of the week was brought here for interment Wednesday, funeral services were held from the Presbyterian church at 2 p.m. Deceased was aged 85, and was the widow of the late Augustus Hofman, a former well known Plymouth business man, who preceded her in death in the year 1887. The deceased spent the greater part of her life in Plymouth, going to Pennsylvania several years ago. Hogan, E.T. -- Newville. The Misses Hogan received a telegram last week stating that their brother, Judge E.T. Hogan, of California, was dead. He was a student under Thomas Bartley, went to California in 1852, and had passed his 72d. mile post in life. Hogan, John -- John Hogan, formerly of this city, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth's Hospital at Dayton, of consumption. He was 24 years of age, was a printer by trade and at one time worked in this city. He was a member of New York No. 6 Typographical Union, also of Dayton Union No. 45. The body was brought here from Dayton at midnight for interment. The funeral services will probably take place at St. Peter's Catholic church at 8:30 o'clock Friday. Hogg, Stella -- Died, on Sabbath morning, June 11th., 1876, Stella, only daughter of Mrs. S.P. Hogg, died of diphtheria in this city, aged 9 years. This interesting child had a religious turn of mind, was truthful and conscientious, and a member of the infant class of Sabbath school scholars at Grace Church, and but a few moments before her young spirit departed sang two lines of the chorus of that beautiful hymn, "Savior, like a Shepherd lead us" &c., which was appropriately sung by her little classmates in the chapel of the Church as they stood around the casket that held the remains, which were embedded in flowers, and on which were a beautiful floral star, harp and cross. The funeral took place from Grace Church which was filled with sympathizing friends of the heart-stricken, lonely mother. The services were conducted by Rev. Holland, Clayton -- Clayton Holland, aged 20 years, son of Wm. Holland, of the south part of Jefferson Township, was killed on the B.&O. track just this side of Newark, on Wednesday evening. He had been working in a restaurant at Newark and it is supposed that he was beating his way home on a freight train when he lost his life. Both legs were cut off and his body mangled. His remains were brought home yesterday and buried today from the residence of his parents. Holland, W.N. -- W.N. Holland died Monday morning, March 5, about 2 o'clock at his home in Bellville, after an illness of several weeks. Mr. Holland had been an invalid for twenty-five years with paralysis, and was in the grocery business for the past twenty years, but recently disposed of his store on account of his health failing. His age was 57 years, 2 months and 3 days. He is survived by his widow, one son, Carl, and a daughter, Mrs. W.N. Ailer, of Mansfield. Also one brother and four sisters besides a host of friends to mourn the loss of a kind husband and father and a good citizen. Those who attended the funeral from a distance were C.D. Evans and Mrs. Nicholas Carroll, of Columbus, Mrs. D. Scott, of Butler, Mrs. Alta Holland, of Newark, and Benton Swank and family, Smith Hamilton, Clarence Hamilton and W.H. Ailer and wife, all of Mansfield. The floral offerings from the business people's association, W.C.T.U., the ladies of the M.E. church, Benton Swank and family, Mrs. Mary Johns and family and W.W. Johns were beautiful and tokens of the esteem in which Mr. Holland was held. Funeral services were held at the M.E. church Wednesday, at 2 p.m., conducted by his pastor, Rev. Arthur Smith. Holland, W.N. -- W.N. Holland, who has been failing in health the past year or more, died at his home in Bellville Monday morning at 2 o'clock, aged 56 years last January. He has been a great sufferer the past two weeks. His lower limbs have been in a paralyzed condition for 23 years. Mr. Holland has been in the grocery business for 20 years, the most of that time in Bellville. He is survived by his wife, son Carl, and daughter Mrs. W.A. Aller, of Mansfield. Hollenbaugh, Benjamin -- Another old pioneer has fallen. Mr. Benjamin HOLLENBAUGH died last Thursday morning at his residence on North Broadway. He came to this vicinity in 1834, with WENTZ’s, BLOOM’s, BRINER’s, ROUSHES’s and others from our old home in the East and aided in clearing up this County. He died aged about 75 years. Hollenbaugh, David -- David Hollenbaugh, who has been a rural mail carrier out of Shelby for the past thirteen years was struck and instantly killed by a Big Four express train Christmas afternoon while he was returning to his home. He was 73 years old and a veteran of the Civil War. Mr. Hollenbaugh was struck at the same crossing by a freight train six years ago and his rig was demolished but he was carried a mile on the pilot uninjured. Hollenbaugh, Frank L. -- PASSED AWAY LAST NIGHT AT 11:50 AT SHELBY MEMORIAL HOSPITAL - The death of Frank L. Hollenbaugh, a well known and highly respected citizen of this community, occurred last night at 11:50 o'clock at the Shelby Memorial hospital. Mr. Hollenbaugh had been ill for the past several years and was taken to the hospital several weeks ago for treatment. He continued to grow weaker and physicians were powerless to have his life. Mr. Hollenbaugh resided on the Shelby-Plymouth road just north of Shelby. He was a frequent business visitor in Shelby and active for many years in the Masonic lodge serving as Worshipful Master. He is survived by his wife and one daughter. The body was removed to the Sutter undertaking parlors this morning and after being prepared for burial removed to the family home. The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Methodist Episcopal church and will be conducted by Rev. F. A. Gilmore, pastor of the church. The Masonic order will have charge of the service. The body will be laid to rest in the Oakland cemetery. Submitted by Terry W. Hollenbaugh, Isaac -- ISAAC HOLLENBAUGH - DIED THIS MORNING AT HOME OF SON, BERT HOLLENBAUGH, NORTHWEST OF SHELBY - Isaac Hollenbaugh, a pioneer resident of this community, died this morning at 8:15 o'clock at the home of his son Bert Hollenbaugh two and a quarter miles northwest of Shelby. Mr. Hollenbaugh had been ill since last February and a part of the time confined to his bed. He was well and favorably known throughout this community having resided here all his life. The funeral services will be held Monday, meet at the home at 1:30 o'clock and following this at the United Brethren church where the service will be held and conducted by Rev. J. H. Arnold, pastor of his church. The body will be laid to rest in the Oakland cemetery. Isaac Hollenbaugh was born on the Jacob Briner farm Nov. 6, 1840. His father, Benjamin and his mother, Mary, were the parents of eleven children. Mr. Hollenbaugh was reared on the farm, attended the district schools and his life was devoted to agricultural pursuits. He was married Jan. 4, 1866 to Miss Emily Roush, who was also born in Richland county. To this union were born two children, one son, Bert Hollenbaugh, and one daughter, Cora, who is the wife of George Sheely. He was preceeded in death by his wife several years ago and is survived by a son and daughter. At the outbreak of the Civil war six of his brothers enlisted in various regiments and during the closing days of the memorable struggle Mr. Hollenbaugh enlisted, serving 100 days in the 165 O. V. I. Mr. Hollenbaugh was a member of the United Brethren church and for many years was a member of the board of directors of the Citizens Bank of Shelby, with which directorate at the time of his death. Hollinshead, Wallace J. -- BELIEVED IN CHRISTIAN SCIENCE AND DIED WITHOUT MEDICAL ATTENDANCE -- Coroner Bushnell Called Upon to Investigate the Death of Wallace J. Hollinshead -- Coroner William Bushnell was called upon this morning to investigate the death of Wallace J. Hollinshead, a Christian Scientist, residing at 87 East Fourth street. It was learned that the young man had had no regular medical attendance and that he died this morning about 2:00, presumably of consumption. The coroner, accompanied by Constable Winters, went to the Hollinshead home, where the body was viewed and some of the facts in the case learned. The inquest will be held this evening. Wallace J. Hollinshead was born at Bucyrus March 14, 1881, the son of Mr. & Mrs. Frank M. Hollinshead, now of this city, and lived there until four years ago when he came to this city, which has been his home ever since. He was employed for awhile by the Buckeye Bakery as delivery man and he was employed at other places here. He was also in the bakery business for himself until, on account of illness, he was not able to continue the work. For the past four years he has attended Christian Scientist services and for about two years he has been a member of the church, believing firmly in its doctrines. It was learned at the Hollinshead home that Wallace was ill for about six weeks, part of the time being able to be out of bed. The trouble seemed to be catarrhal consumption. Mrs. Mary J. Drake, the Christian Science physician, also the pastor of the First Church of Christ Scientist, attended him. The claim is made that the young man refused absolutely to have medical attendance, saying: "If God can't cure me the doctors can't." There was a fire at the Hollingshead home about 5:00 Wednesday afternoon and this seemed to have had a bad effect on the sick man. He grew worse from that time. Mrs. Bertie Klahr, of Bucyrus, has been here at the bedside of her brother for the past two weeks. The remains will be taken at 11:25 tonight on the Pennsylvania to Bucyrus, where the funeral services, conducted by Mrs. Mary J. Drake, of this city, the pastor of the local Church of Christ, Scientist, will be held Sunday morning at 10:30. The mother and sister of the young man are Christian Scientists, the former belonging here and the sister at Bucyrus. The father does not belong to the church. Mrs. Drake resides at College Place and here the services are usually held. There is a small membership here of about a dozen and a congregation of possibly twenty at the services. Mrs. Drake and Mrs. Klahr were anxious to show that there is a great difference between the teachings of Dowie and those of Mrs. Eddy, the head of the Christian Scientists. "We believe if God or prayer can't hal, no one can. It is not like Dowieism at all. Christian Science is divine mind healing, the understanding of the mind of God. We are instruments in his hands. Wallace had a great horror of Dowieism." Mrs. Drake asked if he wanted a physician and he said he did not. If he had wanted a physician one would have been called. The Christian Scientists do not go against the law; they obey, even to putting out cards. Physicians are not forbidden, but it is believed that if divine metaphysics will not avail, nothing will. Hollister, Burrell S. -- 47, of 381 W. Fifth St., died Sunday at the Mansfield General Hospital after an illness of one year. The body was removed to the Wappner Funeral Home where services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 o'clock in charge of Rev. O.S. Goerner, assistant pastor of the First Lutheran Church. Holm, Edward -- Death, the grim reaper, was abroad again last night and claimed another victim in the person of Edward Holm, one of the prominent young business men of the city. Mr. Holm was taken sick early last spring. He grew rapidly worse, but under the treatment of his physician recovered sufficiently to be able to be taken to Michigan. The rapid recovery of health which was hoped for did not come and after a stay of several weeks he returned to the city. Some eight weeks since Mr. Holm took to his bed at the Sherman House, and was subsequently removed to the residence of his brother, Geo. A. Holm, at No. 224 West Third Street. His condition varied from day to day, but yesterday he was considerably better. Miss Alice Holm, a sister who has been at the bedside of the patient for the past two weeks, left for her home in Bucyrus about 8 o'clock in the evening, thinking that her brother was in no immediate danger. The deceased's sister-in-law, who had cared for him unceasingly during his illness, assisted him to walk about the house and yard and at 10 o'clock seated the sick man in a chair upon the veranda. Mr. Holm conversed freely with his sister-in-law and made plans as to what he would do if he got well. Suddenly Mr. Holm threw up his hands and exclaimed: "Quick! Call some one!" As Mrs. Holm turned to look at him he fell out of the chair and became unconscious. Capt. W.H. Taylor, who happened to be passing, assisted Mrs. Holm to carry the patient into the house, George Holm being absent at the time. Death resulted in ten minutes, the immediate cause being the result of the bursting of an abscess in the throat, which filled the lungs and caused strangulation. The deceased was born in Bucyrus thirty-eight years ago, came to this city in 1873 and became a member of the firm of Holm & Bro. "Ed" as he was familiarly called, numbered his friends by the hundreds and was always warm-hearted, genial and jovial. The name of Ed. Holm was always prominent in dancing circles and no affair of this kind in his "set" was considered complete without him. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias and also a member of the B.P.O. Elks a well as the Mohican Club. A telegram was at once sent to Bucyrus notifying the mother and sister of the sad event an they are expected to arrive here at an early hour this morning. Holtem, Thomas -- Bellville. Thos. Holtem died at Lakeview Hospital in Cleveland on Sunday, Sept. 15th. in his 54th. year. He had undergone a surgical operation and for a time seemed to improve but suddenly became worse and died before his relatives could be summoned. The body was brought to this place on Monday evening and taken in charge by the Masonic Lodge, of which fraternity Mr. Holtem was a prominent member. The funeral took place from the residence of Miss Mary Holtem, a sister of the deceased, on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. Services conducted by Bellville Lodge, F. and A.M., assisted by Rev. Holtz, Catharine -- Died, near Shelby, March 8th., 1872, Mrs. Catharine Holtz, wife of Jacob Holtz, aged 77 years, and 21 days. The departed was born in Cumberland County, Pa., and in early life became a resident of this County. She lived with her husband in the holy bonds of matrimony over 53 years. She was for many years a worthy member of the Reformed Church at London (OH). Her piety was of a quiet and reserved kind; yet deep, fervent and enduring unto the end, imparting untold consolation in her hours of sickness, and her happy departure to the Saint's eternal home. The deceased was about two years ago attacked with a stroke of paralysis. Her last illness was dropsy. The funeral was largely attended, on last Sabbath at the London Church and her remains consigned to earth by the appropriate rites of the Church. N.H.L. Holtz, Gerald E. -- GERALD E. HOLTZ - SHELBY - Gerald E. Holtz, 75, of 5541 Bowman St. died Tuesday morning at Mansfield General Hospital after a heart attack. Mr. Holtz was born Sept. 15, 1918, in Ganges to Bert and Drusilla Baker Holtz. He had been a farmer since he was 14 years old. He loved animals and enjoyed raising peacocks and pheasants. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Steiner Holtz, whom he married Nov. 7, 1945; a son John A. Holtz of the home; and other relatives. Mr. Holtz was preceded in death by a son, Donald E. Holtz, in 1974. Calling hours are today from 6 to 9 p.m. at Barkdull Funeral Home, where funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Ganges Cemetery. Holtz, Harry -- Harry Holtz, second son of Dr. & Mrs. S.S. Holtz, who some two weeks ago was kicked in the stomach and chest by a horse, suffering a broken rib, was taken to a Cleveland hospital Tuesday morning where he passed away at 3:30 o'clock Wednesday morning, aged about 31 years. No operation was made, his death being attributed by the hospital physicians as being caused by acute dilation of the heart, complicated by nephritis and uræmic poisoning, and which no doubt was hastened by the injuries received in being kicked. His body was brought here Wednesday afternoon and taken to the home of his parents on Trux Street, from which funeral services were held Friday forenoon at 10:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. R.H. Homberger, Edward -- Edward Homberger, one of Mansfield's best known citizens and member of the firm of Hautzenroeder & Co., proprietors of the Buckeye Cigar factory, died at his home, 522 Park Avenue West, Saturday evening about 7:30 o'clock. The immediate cause of his death was heart failure, though he had been ill for a long time with paralysis, having sustained several strokes. He had been feeling worse than usual Saturday and gradually grew worse as the day drew to a close and passed away at the hour mentioned. Though he had been ill so long his death came rather unexpectedly and was a great blow to his relatives and hosts of friends who knew him in a business and social way. In all of his associations he was highly respected and his death is greatly regretted. Mr. Homberger was born May 11, 1842, at Giessen, Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany, and came to the United States when he was about 18 years of age. For six or seven years he was in business at El Paso, New Mexico, trading with the Indians, being associated with A.B. Dittenhoefer and others. Later he came to Ohio and to Mansfield and with A.B. Dittenhoefer was in the dry goods business for some time. He was afterwards in business at Kansas City and subsequently returned to this city. For some time he was bookkeeper for J.B. Netscher & Co. For the past 25 years he and Leonard Hautzenroeder have been associated in the cigar manufacturing business and the establishment has grown until it is one of the largest in this part of the state. Mr. Homberger was married April 19, 1869, to Miss Susan Robbins, who with two sons, Edward and Herman, survives him. Mr. Homberger was well known in fraternal circles, being a member of Mansfield Chapter, No. 28, of the Royal Arch Mason; Madison Lodge, No. 26, Knights of Pythias; Mansfield Lodge, No. 56, B.P.O.E. and of Mansfield Council, No. 13, of the United Commercial Travelers. Funeral services Tuesday afternoon at 4 o'clock, under the auspices of Mansfield Lodge of the B.P.O.E.; the eulogy by the Rev. Charles Lemoine, pastor of the Congregational church. Hooker, Charles R. -- At 4 o'clock Sunday afternoon Charles R. Hooker died at his residence on West Third street at the age of 75 years, 2 months and 23 days. He was born in Rutland county, Vermont. He was married twice, the first time to Hermia Johnson at New Haven, O., Dec. 31 1835, who died June 28, 1868, and the second time to Lavina J. Strong, at Dayton, August 9, 1869, who died Feb. 28, 1888. He leaves no children. Deceased has been a resident of this city and vicinity for many years. Hooker, Charles Richard -- Charles Richard Hooker, after a lingering illness died at 4 o'clock p.m. March 23, at his residence, 58 West Third Street. He was born in Rutland County, Vt., Jan. 1, 1815. He married Hermia Johnson, at New Haven, O., Dec. 31, 1835, who died June 28, 1868. He married again, the second time to Lavina J. Strong, at Dayton, Aug. 9, 1869, who died Feb. 21, 1888. He had no children. Mr. Hooker came to Mansfield soon after his first marriage and managed the North American hotel for about six months when he went to Ganges where he "kept tavern" for a number of years. From Ganges he went to Fredericktown [Knox Co.] and from Fredericktown he returned to Mansfield about 20 years ago and has resided here. He was made a Mason at Fredericktown and was received into Mansfield Lodge, No. 35, F. and A.M., on demit from Thrall Lodge, No. 170, June 6, 1883. He was received into Mansfield Chapter R.A.M. on demit from Clinton Chapter, Mt. Vernon, Oct. 5, 1875, and was transferred from Clinton Commandery, No. 5, to Mansfield Commandery, K.T., June 5, 1878. Funeral services will be held at the residence, by the Rev. J.W. Hoops, Samantha -- "Death loves a shining mark". Mrs. Samantha Hoops, wife of R.B. Hoops, who is a nephew of Dr. I.S. Sampsell, of this place, passed away at the residence of her uncle, Monday morning, 18th. inst. She came for treatment about four months ago. She was improving until a week before her decease, the disease attacked the brain and refused to yield to medical skill. Her husband came the 12th. inst. only to add his fruitless efforts to restore her health. About 4 a.m. on Monday she passed away from her suffering, and her earthly plans of returning home were changed for God's plan, which is always best in the end. Her sisters Mrs. A.C. Crawford and Miss Abbie Whitney of Maples, Ind. in charge of her son, Noah Hoops arrived Monday afternoon, in the deep waters of affliction when they found that a loved sister and mother had left them for the eternal world. A brief and impressive memorial service was conducted by Rev. W.W. Anderson, at Dr. Sampsell's residence, at 7:30 p.m. Monday, attended by quite a number of truly sympathizing friends. The remains, accompanied with the husband, son and two sisters, were taken on the early train Tuesday, to Maples, Ind. for burial, there to await the resurrection. May God sustain by his grace, and guide by his spirit, the Comforter, the stricken heart of a mother, a sister and two brothers who were not at the memorial service here, but in their midst, Mrs. R.B. Hoops is to be laid away in earth's last resting place. Hoover, ---- -- Thursday. Miss Hoover, daughter of George Hoover, who resides four miles north of this city, died last night after a lingering illness with consumption. Hoover, Alfred -- The remains were brought to this city at an early hour this morning and are being prepared for burial at Wappner's. The funeral will be held at his late residence, nearly six miles from this city, Sunday evening, at 4 o'clock, and the interment will be held at the Koogle Cemetery, near Mifflin. Rev. Sprengle, of Ashland, will officiate. The deceased was a bachelor, aged about 60 years. Hoover, Charles -- BELLVILLE RESIDENT DIES AT HOSPITAL -- DEATH SUMMONS CHARLES HOOVER AFTER A BRIEF ILLNESS -- Charles Hoover, aged 67 years, died Monday morning in the Mansfield General hospital, following a brief illness. Mr. Hoover was a resident of Bellville for a number of years and a life-long resident of Richland county. He was a member of the Salem Lutheran church. Those surviving are: The Misses Hulda and Jennie Hoover and Hulbert Hoover, living in Bellville; and a brother in Cleveland. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:00, from the Hoover home, Markey street, with the Rev. Charles W. Cassel preaching the sermon. Interment was made in the Bellville cemetery. Hoover, Daniel -- Died, at his residence in Mifflin Township, November 16, 1879, Daniel Hoover, aged 83 years and 6 months. Mr. Hoover was born in Rockingham County, Va., May 16, 1796, and when eight years old did, with his parents, moved to Fairfield County, Ohio; from thence he came to Richland County when he was eighteen years old, settling on the farm where he died. He was one of the early settlers of Mifflin township, and he experienced many of the hardships and privations of "pioneer life". In his feeble old age we have heard him relate many incidents of his early manhood. He was a man of great endurance and muscular power, and large physical development. He leaves four sons and one daughter. His wife preceded him to "The eternal home of Peace" in 1870. Mr. Hoover had been a member of the Baptist Church for upwards of forty years. -- M. Hoover, Elizabeth -- DIED -- In Crawford County, Ohio, June 20th., 1873, Mrs. ELIZABETH HOOVER, aged 79 years, 8 months and 17 days. Mrs. H. was the widow of Henry Hoover, who died some 15 years ago. She was born in Frederick Co., Maryland, October 3d., 1794, and was a resident of this township [Jefferson Twp.] for 41 years. She was a member of the U.B. Church for 50 years. Hoover, John -- Monday. Word was received this afternoon by friends in this city of the death of John Hoover, at Crestline. The deceased was a brother of Clarence Hoover, of this city (Mansfield). Hoover, John -- John Hoover, aged 68 years, died at his home on Bartley Avenue, at 2:30 o'clock this morning. Mr. Hoover was an old resident of Mansfield, having settled in this vicinity long before the first railroad was built through the county. The deceased had two brothers, William and Samuel, both of whom, together with himself, were engaged during the early period of the history of Mansfield in driving stages from this city to Lake Erie. Upon the building of the S., M. & N. railroad Mr. Hoover secured a position as baggage master at the depot here, shortly afterwards he was appointed depot police, after which he went on the road as brakeman, fireman, engineer and finally as conductor. The deceased had been sick about six months with a complication of heart and kidney trouble, which finally caused his death. He leaves a wife and family in comfortable circumstances. The funeral will take place from the residence on Bartley Avenue, Monday, at 4 o'clock. Rev. H.L. Hoover, Samuel -- DIED -- SAMUEL, son of Simon and Louisa Hoover, was born May the 29th., 1869, was taken very suddenly with Inflammatory Croup, and died on the 10th. day of October, 1873, aged 4 years, 4 months and 11 days. The father of little Samuel was away from home on business in his first sickness, but was summoned in time to soothe him in death and witness his departure. The sympathetic efforts of a mother, and deep anxiety of brothers and sisters could not detain him. [BELLVILLE WEEKLY: 17 October 1873, Vol. 2, No. 33]

Hoover, Simon -- Simon Hoover was born in Maryland, Sept. 19th., 1828 and died Oct. 18th., 1894, aged 66 years and 29 days. When he was four years old his parents moved to Ohio and settled in Richland Co. He continued to reside in this county until his death. On the 20th. of March 1851 he was united in marriage to Louisa Timanus. To them were born eleven children; four of whom have gone before. Seven, five sons and two daughters, remain with their mother to know again the visitation of death. Three brothers and two sisters only remain of a family of eleven children. Other relatives and friends will also miss him. For years he was a devoted member of Mt. Olive Lutheran church. His last illness was short. Stricken with paralysis, he steadily declined though without great suffering. He was able to converse but little yet was conscious much of the time. He prayed and gave testimony to his faith in Christ and said he had nowhere else to trust. His remains were laid to rest in the Bellville Cemetery Sabbath, Oct. 21, 1894. Hoover, William -- Alta. William Hoover, who spent the winter in California for his health, returned about two months ago, but did not find the desired relief and gradually grew weaker until last Wednesday when he passed away. Hoover, William -- Bellville. Wm. Hoover died Tuesday night at 10 o'clock, his malady being appendicitis, aged about 40 years. He was operated on Saturday evening. A wife and four children are left to mourn their loss. He was buried at Four Corners church Thursday. The funeral was preached at the church by Rev. Hopkins, John -- Sawed in Twain. The appended item taken from the Findlay Republican will be of interest to the readers of the NEWS as the unfortunate man was well known in Richland County, having formerly resided at Lexington from 1872 and 1877. Mr. Hopkins attended the school at the seminary in Lexington. His wife was the daughter of Charles Boals, of Ontario. The horrible accident, which occurred Wednesday, is here detailed: John C. Hopkins, of 413 Cherry Street, met with a horrible accident resulting in his almost instant death Wednesday at Funk & Plotner's reel and tank factory, where he was employed. His body was all but cut in twain by a circular saw. Until about 9 o'clock Mr. Hopkins had been at work at a table, ripping out cistern staves. Rush R. Plotner was at work at the circular saw, tenoning the ends of bull-wheel shafts. Two or three of these had been finished and rolled off upon a frame at the right of the saw carriage. Mr. Plotner then began to make preparations to roll the shafts back over the carriage onto a small truck. To do this a small skid was placed from the carriage to the truck. About this time Mr. Hopkins came over, evidently to assist Mr. Plotner in moving the shaft. The latter was about four feet from the saw, placing the skid in position. Mr. Hopkins was standing just behind Mr. Plotner and between him and the saw, which is about two feet in diameter and a few inches from the floor. The end of the carriage, on which the shafts or other material to be awed are placed, is a few inches in front of the saw. Mr. Plotner spoke to Mr. Hopkins and then stooped over to pick up a small block of wood to place on the skid. While doing so he hard Hopkins utter a cry and looking around wsa horrified to see the unfortunately man wedged in at the end of the carriage and against the rapidly revolving saw. It was only an instant's work for Mr. Plotner to throw off the belt, but it was too late. The saw had ploughed its teeth deep into Mr. Hopkins body. Mr. Plotner and other employees at once disengaged the unfortunate man's body from the saw but not without some difficulty. As he was laid down upon the floor he looked up to Mr. Plotner and said "Good bye, Rush". They were his last words. His life blood poured foth from the severed arteries and he soon became unconscious. His wife arrived a few minutes later and spoke to her husband, but he made no reply. Drs. T.G. Barnhill and F.W. Entrikin arrived in response to calls, but, of course, could do nothing. Despite his awful injuries, it was about 30 minutes before the unfortunate man expired. It is not known just how the accident occurred. Mr. Hopkins had the reputation of being a very careful man. It is supposed, however, that when he went to step over the carriage, which is about a foot high, and a foot wide, he stumbled and fell against the saw. Another supposition is that he placed his left foot upon the end cross piece of the carriage and that it slipped off, throwing his left leg against the saw. At any rate the saw evidently first struck the calf of his left leg and pulled him down. The saw made an ugly cut from his left leg up to his hips and then straight across and through his body just below the small of his back. His body was nearly cut in two, being only held together by some muscles and the skin at the front of his abdomen. The wonder is that his death was not instantaneous. It must have been practically so. The deceased was 40 years of age and came here with his family from Steubenville about three years ago. He had worked for Messrs. Funk & Plotner for the past two years and previously was in the employ of Evans & Perfect. He leaves a wife and two sons and two daughters. The oldest child is 14 and the youngest is 6 years of age. Horn, Alice (Wilkinson) -- Lexington. The Rev. W.W. Anderson, of Loudonville, officiated Dec. 14, at the last sad rites of Mrs. Alice Horn, who died Saturday at her home near Lexington. Interment was at Bellville. Her husband, Professor Frank Horn, and two children, the youngest being but 2 weeks old, survive her. It is just that a brief tribute be paid to the deceased, whose age was 40 years, 9 months and 15 days. Her heart was linked in golden chains of love with her family and her fine feminine graces, her intelligence conspired to make her a favorite in social circles. Truth, justice, mercy, dominated her life and when the shadow of death hovered over her the light of hope and love glowed bright in her trusting heart. Mrs. Horn graduated from the Mansfield High School in 1876 and in 1891 was married to Professor Frank L. Horn. She leaves a husband and two small children to mourn her loss. Horn, Edith Lenore -- Miss Edith Horn, we are sorry to say, died Monday at her home at Chicago, IL. She has been in ill health for some time, but her death comes unexpected, as we had not learned of her being seriously ill. Miss Horn was a former employee of this office and well liked by everybody. Her remains were brought to Bellville Wednesday evening and funeral services were held at the St. Paul's Lutheran church Thursday at 2 p.m., conducted by the Rev. O. MacWilliams. Horn, Edith Lenore -- Edith Lenore Horn was born at Bellville, O., August 17, 1882, and died at Chicago, IL, Jan. 8, 1906, aged 23 years, 4 months and 22 days. She entered the Bellville schools in Sept. 1888 and graduated May 31, 1900. Following her graduation she was employed in the Messenger office until Aug. 1901 when she moved with her family to Chicago. After completing a course in the Athenaeum Business College she filled a temporary position, then entered the employ of the firm of Mr. J.S. Little with whom she remained through various changes in its organization, advancing regularly until she became private secretary to the head of the firm. Horn, John Henry -- SUDDEN DEATH OF WELL-KNOWN MAN -- J.H. HORN, HIGHLY RESPECTED CITIZEN, DIES SUDDENLY AT BELLVILLE -- Funeral services for the late John Henry Horn, who died suddenly last Thursday afternoon, were held from the residence to the St. Paul's Lutheran church last Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Stanley R. Garber, Lisle E. Garber, Miss Martha Ritter and Mrs. M.O. Leedy composted the quartette which sang. The Sunday school class taught by Mr. Horn was present in a body. Following the services, conducted by the Rev. Charles W. Cassel, during interment in the Bellville Cemetery, the Masonic Lodge held a brief service also. John Henry Horn, of German and French parentage, was born near Hagerstown, Md., Jan. 29th., 1849. He passed from this life March 30, 1922 at the age of 73 years. At the age of six, with his parents, he came to Richland county where, with the exception of a few years, he spent the remainder of his life. August 26, 1874, he was married to Anna Eliza Hiskey, to which union were born three children. At an early age he united with the Salem Lutheran church, where he still retained his membership. After attending the Gailey's Seminary at Lexington, he began teaching in the public schools, at the age of 19, at Chestnut Chapel with an enrollment of 77 scholars. This profession he followed in connection with farming for a period of over 50 years. He was a devoted and successful teacher, in which capacity he exacted a lasting influence that is immeasurable. He was a member of the Masonic lodge of Bellville. Three years ago he moved from the farm to Bellville, where he spent the remainder of his days. He was a loyal citizen, a respected friend and a devoted husband. He was ever energetic in the work of the church and lived a consistent and faithful Christian. He is survived by his wife, one son, Charles A. Horn of Bellville; two daughters, Mrs. W.D. Biddle of near Bellville, and Mrs. Chas. Foust, of New Springfield; 12 grandchildren, four brothers, Peter Horn of Chicago, Ill.; George Horn of Johnsville, O.; Frank Horn of Toledo; and S.A. Horn of Kansas City, Mo., and two sisters, Mrs. Katie Winters of Toledo, O., and Mrs. Elizabeth Maxwell of near Lexington. A host of other relatives and friends deeply mourn his loss. Horn, Peter -- Bellville. Peter Horn, who was born in Hesse, Darmstadt, Europe, and was well known in this county, departed this life Dec. 22nd., at the age of 63 years, 11 months and 4 days. Horn, Royal Douglass -- Dr. R.D. Horn, who for the past eleven years had been a practicing physician at Buterl, died Saturday noon at Lakeside Hospital in Cleveland, where he had been for almost four weeks suffering from a complication of diseases which terminated in pneumonia. Royal Douglass Horn as born in Millwood, Knox County, October 16, 1857, having reached the age of __ years, 4 months and 15 days. On June 6, 1885 he was united in marriage with Alice B. ______. To them were born seven _________, ________ of whom died in infancy. He is survived by his wife and five children, Mrs. D.L. Wilson of Butler, Rufus Horn who is attending school at Bethany, W. Va., Daniel, Albert and Helen, at home; also one sister, Mrs. J.E. Sellers, and two brothers, William and Joseph Horn, all of Mt. Vernon and as a young man began to read medicine in the office of Dr. Russell at Mt. Vernon. He later took the full course in medicine at the Western Reserve Medical College, Cleveland, from which he was graduated with high honors. Following his graduation he entered practice at North Liberty, where he continued until about eleven years ago when he moved to Butler where he enjoyed a large practice which extended over a radius of many miles. He had not enjoyed robust health during the past several months but it had been the hope of his family and friends that he would recover. Hornberger, Catherine Snyder -- Catherine Snyder Hornberger was born in Lebanon County, Pa., Aug. 31st., 1819 and died in Jackson Township, Richland County, Ohio, Oct. 7th., 1890, aged 71 years, 1 month and 7 days. In early childhood her parents moved to Stark County, Ohio, where she spent her youth. In 1842 she was united in marriage to Bergeman Hornberger, which union was blessed with five children. Thirty-seven years ago her husband departed this life, leaving her a widow with a dependant family. By energy and strict economy she raised and educated her children and paid the debts that were on the farm and laid by a competency, so that in her old age she had the comforts of life. When she was eighteen years of age she identified herself with the German Reformed church and remained a faithful member of the same until about four years ago, when she united with th Mt. Bethel Lutheran church, of which she remained a faithful and honored member until the day of her death. Two sons and one daughter remain to mourn the loss of a devoted Christian mother. Horner, A.J. -- A Shelby special in Saturday's Enquirer was as follows: A sad accident occurred in this city this forenoon at eleven o'clock, resulting in the sudden death of one of Shelby's most prominent young men, A.J. Horner, an employee of the Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati and Indianapolis and Baltimore and Ohio Railroads. While in the act of making a car coupling he had his head caught between the draw-bars and was instantly killed. The pin with which he intended to make the coupling by some mishap fell to the ground. Horner, Agnes Fisher -- MRS. DOW HORNER DIES AT MEMORIAL - Mrs. Dow (Agnes Fisher) Horner, 83, of 16 Church St. died at 7:15 p.m. Sunday at Shelby Memorial Hospital, following a short illness. She was born in Carey, Ohio June 11, 1892, and lived most of her life in Shelby. She and her husband had operated the former Horner's Lunch, for many years. She was a member of the Most Pure Heart of Mary Church, and the Altar and Rosary Society. Survivors include: a son, Thomas, of Shelby; two sisters, Mrs. Jack Coleman of Shelby and Mrs. David Williams of Lake Worth, Fla.; two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Her husband, Dow, preceded her in death one year ago. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Most Pure Heart of Mary Church. Rev. Father John J. Hosack, Adam -- Two weeks since the death of Adam Hosack was announced. Father Hosack was the oldest resident of Perry Township. He was born in Washington Co., Pa., April the 25th., 1799. He came to this county in 1823, cleared up a few acres of land and erected a cabin. He then returned to his native home. In June, 1825, he married Miss Margaret Stoutt, and in Aug., of the same year, they moved to Perry Township, where they resided until his death, which occurred Sept. 28th., 1884. The mother, who has almost reached her four score years, and six children, 2 sons and 4 daughters, are his survivors. The funeral took place Oct. 1st., and was conducted by Rev. Eaggleson, of Mt. Hott, Henrietta (McIlvaine) -- Mrs. Henrietta M. Hott died Friday night, January 10th., at 8 o'clock at the family home No. 178 West Third Street, after a short illness. Mrs. Hott was one of Mansfield's most estimable women and her death came as a personal loss to a host of friends and acquaintances. For many years she had been active in church and charitable work and was a woman whose lovely manner and charming hospitality endeared her to all with whom she came in contact. Houghton, Albert Charles -- Funeral services for Major Albert Charles Houghton, who died at the home of his son, Charles in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, Thursday, were held Saturday afternoon at the Finefrock Funeral Home. Rev. Dr. S. B. Salmon of the First Methodist Episcopal Church, assisted by Rev. Harold Flye of St. Andrews, Tennessee, conducted the last rites. Major Houghton was born at Spencer, Indiana. For a number of years he resided in this city. While a resident here he joined the First Methodist Episcopal Church which connection he retained until death. Major Houghton became a corporal at the age of 19 while serving in the Civil War and was promoted to the rank of Major when he was 24. He was a veteran of seven major engagements and more than 30 minor battles. During the declining years of his life, he made Florida his home. Surviving relatives include his widow, Mrs. Maria Houghton; two sons, Charles of Ft. Wayne and Henry of Iowa City, Iowa; one daughter, Mrs. Grace Flye of St. Andrews, Tennessee, and seven grandchildren. Major Charles Houghton, Ft. Houston, Selby H. -- The many friends of Selby H. Houston will be shocked to learn of his sudden death Wednesday, Feb. 11 at Huron, S.D., where he went about a week ago on a business trip. Death was due to apoplexy. Selby H. Houston was born Dec. 25, 1850 at Olivesburg, Richland County. He was united in marriage with Joan F. Crabbs Jan. 4, 1876. The deceased is survived by his wife, four sons and two daughters, Sylvester, William and Garfield of this city, Elmore of Monessen, Pa.; Minnie and Edith at home, also by three brothers, William of Dayton and Winfield and Edward of this city and one sister, Mrs. Nancy Bennett, of Olivesburg. Hout, John -- John Hout, an aged pioneer settler of Richland County, died at his residence in Springfield Township last Wednesday, of consumption, aged nearly 58 years. He was born in Jefferson County and came to this county with his parents when only a year old. His father settled in Mifflin Township, and we believe his son John resided with him until his marriage, when he settled in Springfield Township and resided there until his death. For the last year or more he has been confined to his residence, and during all his sickness was never heard to murmur, but more his suffering with Christian fortitude. Hout, John -- Mr. John Hout was born in Berkley County, Virginia, April 6th., 1798, and died in Mifflin Township, this county, Oct. 21, 1878, being in his 81st. year. For more than fifty years he had been a resident of this county. He has seen children and grand-children rise up around him, and an almost unbroken wilderness give place to the fruitful fields, towns and cities with which our lands abounds. He had himself helped to effect these changes in which a present generation rejoices. His last years were spent quietly and pleasantly with his son, Samuel Hout, from whom he received every needful attention. His funeral was attended by a large circle of neighbors and relatives, and his remains were laid in the beautiful country burying ground near Windsor, in this county. She was employed as a secretary for the Cardinal Vending Co. She was an active member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church and a former Girl Scout Leader. Surviving are her husband, Robert D. Hout; two daughters, Mrs. Judy Ann Long of 457 Walfield Dr. and Miss Jeanne Hout of 301 West Third St., one brother, Earl L. Hout, Martha -- Monday. Mrs. Martha Hout, wife of George Hout, of Mifflin Township, died yesterday at 2 o'clock p.m. of paralysis and heart disease, aged 64 years. She was a native of Pennsylvania and came to this state while yet a child. She was one of a family of nine children, the youngest of whom is 57 years old, and Mrs. Hout is the first of the nine to die. The deceased leaves, besides her husband, two sons, B.B. and C.B. Hout. The funeral takes places tomorrow at 2 o'clock p.m. The services will be held at the house and conducted by a Mennonite minister from Clarke County, to which denomination Mrs. Hout belonged. Hout, Mary E. -- We are pained to record the death of Miss Mary E. Hout, daughter of Mr. Peter Hout, of the vicinity of West Windsor, this county. This esteemed young woman died on the 11th. inst. in the 22d. year of her age. Insidious disease began its work some time ago, and for two months her decline was rapid, until Tuesday of last week, when she passed away in the hope of a happy immortality. her early death is deeply lamented by her immediate relatives, and by a very large number of acquaintances and friends. The interviews with dear relatives and associates during the last days of her life were very touching, and her admonitions unusually impressive. The funeral on the Thursday succeeding her death, was very largely attended. the services were conducted by the pastor of the English Lutheran Church of this city, after which her remains were conveyed to the beautiful cemetery near West Windsor and there sorrowfully committed to the grave. Hout, Mrs. Cyrus (nee Reed) -- Mrs. Cyrus Hout, aged 24, died at her home, 5 miles east of the city, at 10 o'clock this morning. Mrs. Hout about a week ago, while going to a spring for water, slipped and fell, sustaining what was thought at the time to be only a slight internal injury. Later developments showed, however, that she had sustained more serious injuries than was at first suspected, as she was compelled to take to her bed and sank rapidly until her death this morning. Mrs. Hout leaves a husband and two children, aged 3 and 1 years respectively. She was the daughter of J.P. Reed and wife, living east of the city, and was well known and highly respected. The funeral will take place from the residence at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon, after which the remains will be interred in the Windsor Cemetery. [Richland Shield & Banner: 20 August 1892]

Hout, W. Marion. -- Mansfield. W. Marion Hout, 79, of 1356 Hillcrest Drive died in Mansfield General Hospital Tuesday afternoon after a brief illness. Mr. Hout was born in Mansfield July 17, 1902, and lived here all his life. Before retiring 14 years ago, he was a truck driver for 40 years at the Mansfield Tire and Rubber Company. Mr. Hout was a member of the Twenty-Five Year Club of Mansfield Tire and Rubber Co., and the Retmen’s Club. Surviving are one stepson, Jack Dorman of Ashland; one sister, Mrs. Margaret Hout Bowman of Canton; two step-grandchildren; four step-great grandchildren. Services will be held in the Finefrock Funeral Home Friday at 1 p.m. by the Rev. Carl Cunfer, pastor of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Windsor Cemetery. Houver, Annie E. -- Mrs. Annie E. Houver, of Franklin township, widow of the late Martin Houver, who died March 31 last, died at her home, five miles north of the city, Sunday evening at 5:00 of blood poisoning. Mrs. Houver had a sore finger, by reason of a splinter in it. The sore became worse and the poison extended to other parts of her body, breaking out on her leg where she had had trouble years before. She was 57 years of age. Funeral services Tuesday, the friends meeting at the home at 8:00 and proceeding to Shiloh where the funeral services will be held at the Lutheran church. Howard, George Campbell -- Our good old friend, George C. Howard, Esq., of Bellville, was buried on last Friday. We visited him only a few months ago, and though out of health, little did we suppose we had parted from him for the last time. Howard, George Campbell -- Died, In Bellville, Ohio, on Thursday, August 10th., 1876, at 3 o'clock, P.M., Mr. George C. Howard, aged 63 years, 8 months and 5 days. George Campbell Howard was born on Little Deer Island in Penobscot Bay, Maine, Oct. 5th., 1812. At four years of age, he removed with his parents to Montville in Waldo Co., where he resided till 1834, when he came to Jefferson Township, Richland County, Ohio, and three years after to Bellville where he resided till his death. He was married Dec. 12th., 1834 to Betsy Walker, by whom he had five children, four of whom are still living. He was married to Eliza Ann Durbin, by whom he had dour children, three of whom survive him. Feb. 20th., 1867, death again invaded his domestic circle and bore away his companion, who, for more than twenty years had shared with him life's joys and sorrows. Mr. Howard was favored with more than ordinary capacity, which he improved by study. He was well versed in law, history and current literature. He was a thorough temperance man and as such, is entitled to a fair share of the credit for preserving Bellville from the blighting curse of intemperance. He bore his last sickness with patience and resignation, and as death approached, his children, came from far and near, and with tender devotion, did all that love and duty could suggest in ministering to his wants and alleviating his sufferings. -- W.F.M. Howard, Henry W. -- Bellville. Henry W. Howard, a well known and influential citizen, died Sunday, July 10, aged 53 years. He had been afflicted with dropsy for some time, which caused his death. Funeral services were held from the home Wednesday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. Joseph Mottershead, of the M.E. church. Howard, Hollis B. -- The sad news has reached this place of the death of Hollis B. Howard, of Salinas, California, at the age of 65 years. More than a year ago he sustained a stroke of paralysis from which he has been a constant sufferer ever since. He was married at Monterey, Cal., to Miss Lizzie Nance, who, with two sons and a daughter, mourn the loss of a kind and indulgent husband and father. He was a brother of Mrs. S.B. Young, who visited him in his pleasant home a few years ago; also of Hon. James E. and Ira J. Howard, of this place, and Dr. I.W. Howard, Mrs. E.H. Hayner and Mrs. J.C. Ackerman, of Mansfield. He spent his earlier years with his parents, Johnson and Bathsheba Howard, near this place, until 1863, when he went overland to California, encountering untold hardships, but making the trip of 3,000 miles in less time than had ever been made up to that date. He spent several years in gold mining, after which he turned his attention to dairying on a ranch of 2,500 acres. Howard, Hoy -- Hoy Howard, who died yesterday, was born in Bellville in 1858. His mother died when he was very young and he lived with his father until the latter's death, leaving Hoy an orphan at the age of 15 years. Hoy then went into the employ of W.H. Gurney, with whom he resided for three years. At the end of that time Mr. Howard came to this city and accepted a position as night clerk at the St. James. He left that position a few months after to accept a place in Krause Bros.' grocery. From there he went to Fredericktown to travel for the Fredericktown Bell Foundry. After being with that firm for two years he returned to this city and accepted a position as traveling salesman for the Buckeye Suspender Company and for the past six years has been their head salesman. It is said that Mr. Howard sold more suspenders than any other salesman from this city. He was a genial, jovial gentleman, who made friends by the legion and who retained them all. He was a great lover of all manly sports. About four years ago the deceased married Miss Ada Hedrick, of this city. As a result of their union a son, Homer, two years old, was born. Mr. Howard was a member of Hancock Council, No. 194, National Union, and held a $5,000 policy in that society. Howard, Hoy -- Hoy Howard, the well known traveling man, died at his home at 106 West Bloom Street, at 1 o'clock this afternoon, aged 30 years, 6 months and 5 days. He was married to Miss Ada Hedrick about four years ago. Two children were born to them, one of whom is living. The deceased was a member of the Traveling Men's Association. Howard, I.W. -- BURIAL IN CEMETERY HERE OF DR. HOWARD'S REMAINS -- Burial took place in the Bellville cemetery Wednesday of the remains of Dr. I.W. Howard, brother of Hon. James E. Howard, whose death occurred in Mansfield Monday morning as the result of heart trouble. Dr. Howard was a veterinary surgeon and had practiced in Mansfield for a number of years. He passed away at the home of his sister, Mrs. J.C. Ackerman. He was born December 10, 1847 on a farm, one mile south of Bellville. For some time he was a successful school teacher, but later took up the profession of veterinary surgery and has followed it since 1887. He is survived by his wife, a brother, James E. Howard, Jesse B. -- Bellville. Jesse B. Howard died suddenly at his home on Main Street at 9:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 5th., aged 82 years. The funeral took place from his late residence on Wednesday afternoon. The services were conducted by Rev. H.L. Canfield. Mr. Howard had been afflicted for a year past with rheumatism and recently by dropsy. Howard, Johnson -- Johnson Howard, son of Samuel, was born on Deer Island, Hancock Co., Maine, July 22nd., 1804. Died April 6th., 1887 at his home near Bellville, O., aged 82 years, 8 months and 14 days. Mr. Howard was one of a family of eleven children, of which Jesse is now the only survivor. He came to Ohio Sept. 1835 and in January, 1836, married Bathsheba Walker, daughter of James Walker. Mrs. Howard died January, 1877. To them were born ten children, two of whom died in early youth. Seven of the surviving eight reside in this locality and were present at the funeral. The eighth, H.B., being absent, he having resided in California since 1863. Mr. Howard had been a resident of this county over half a century, and with the exception of about two years, resided on the farm where he died. Although not one of the earliest settlers of this locality, Mr. H. can justly be claimed as one of our pioneers, his life has been spent in hard, earnest toil, to accumulate a home for him and an inheritance for his. Notoriety was shunned and quietude sought by him throughout. He endeavored to live the life of an industrious man. His remains were followed to the grave in Bellville Cemetery Friday the 8th. inst. by an usually large attendance of relatives, friends and neighbors. -- [Bellville Star: 14 April 1887, Vol. 10, No. 29]

Howell, Gerald -- Gerald, beloved son of Mr. & Mrs. Edwin Howell, was born in Croton, Licking County, Ohio, August 23, 1898, and died at midnight, Friday, April 16, 1915, at the age of 16 years, 7 months and 24 days, and as his remains were removed from Lakeside Hospital last Saturday morning, the attendants stood with tears in their eyes, for his loving disposition won the respect of all who worked so hard to save his life, and only a few minutes before he passed away with a smile upon his face, he asked his mother what was the matter. At the age of 8 years or about the time his parents came to Plymouth, he united with the Methodist church on Easter Sunday, and a year later was awarded a diploma for not missing Sunday School during that entire year, and of late years his contributed towards his own membership. Gerald was a Sophomore in High School and was treasurer of his class, also a member of the Boy Scouts, and a member of the Hawk's Club, and again as manager of the High School baseball team, Gerald was always there, and always working to win, and as a member of the High School band he will be greatly missed. About three years ago between school hours, he entered the employ of Karl Webber's drug store, and was always prompt in his duties and pleasant to all. His parents will tell you that he was the life of the home. The flowers today amid which he lies so peacefully, supplied by sorrowing school mates and friends give silent testimony of the regard in which he was held. Gerald will be remembered as a fair flower quickly blooming in the garden of earth and then carried to the Mansion of the Heavenly King. Much as he was loved if he has missed a life of long suffering and cruel pains, he can more easily be given up today, and thank God that the happiness of heaven is his. The funeral was held at the M.E. church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Chas. F. Mott, Tuesday afternoon, and the body was escorted to Greenlawn Cemetery by the Boy Scouts in uniform, the Camp Fire girls, the members of the Hawk's Club, the members of the W.C.T.U., the shop men of the Root-Heath Co., of which the young man's father is an employee, high school pupils and other friends. -- [Plymouth Advertiser: 24 April 1915, Vol. 62, No. 22]

Howell, Jesse -- Jesse Howell 83, died Friday at his home on Pawnee Ave following a two-month illness. Born March 22 1867 at Catlettsburg, Kentucky. He Howell came to Mansfield 26 years ago. He was a former employee of the old Electric Hardware Co. and worked at Empire Steel Corp. until his retirement 15 years ago. A member of the Jehovah's Witnesses. Survived by his wife Catherine Wells Howell, five sons, Theodore W. Howell of Toledo, Manley, James, and Jesse Jr. all of Mansfield. and Woodrow of San Antonio, Texas. Three daughters, Mrs. William Johnson, of Toledo, Mrs. Nannie Nunley of Richmond, Va. Mrs. Peter Mott of Mansfield 12 grandchildren. Services Wappners 1:p.m. with Rev. W.A.Thrutchlay. Hoyer, Harry -- Another of the Co. M boys is dead. At noon today, Corp. Harry Hoyer, who has been in the emergency hospital, corner of Park Avenue West and Mulberry Street, since his return to this city last Thursday, passed away. His death was rather sudden, notwithstanding that he has been in a serious condition for several days. The body will be taken to Nashville, Thursday at 11:15 a.m. and there will be no service here. Harry Hoyer was well known here, having resided in Mansfield for some time. His father, Frank Hoyer, lives in a house at the rear of the high school building. He was between 23 and 24 years of age and for some time before going to the war had been employed at the Monarch Stove works. His death was due to a complication of diseases. He has had heart trouble for years, but had been well until after reaching Montauk Point, when he was taken sick and continued to be ill. He had typhoid malaria and heart trouble and was quite ill when he arrived here last Thursday with the members of his company. Hoyle, Sadie -- Died, in Mansfield, September 23d., of consumption, Miss Sadie Hoyle, youngest daughter of Henry Hoyle, Esq. It is painful to chronicle the death of such an estimable young lady just in the prime and beauty of life, so dearly beloved by her parents and sister, so highly esteemed by her associates. One with all the graces and Christian virtues which made a noble woman. Through all her lingering sickness and suffering, which medical aid could not relieve, she bore the pains patiently with prefect faith in the Savior whom she had been taught to love and adore from infancy. Hubbell, Gertrude (Cleveland) -- Tuesday. Gertrude Hubbell, aged 26 years, an inmate of Wilhelm's bagnio on East John Street, who was known as Lillian St. Clair, died of hemorrhage of the lungs last night. A telegram was sent to her father, George Cleveland, who resides at Leonidas, Mich., asking what shall be done with the remains and pending an answer the body lies at Niman's undertaking rooms. The receipt of a telegram on Saturday announcing the death of James Hubbell, at his home in Milford, Neb., created a feeling of sorrow among the many friends of himself and family in this place. Hubbell, James R. -- Hon. James R. Hubbell, who has been visiting his son at Bellville for some time and who has been confined to his bed for several months with a complication of diseases, died last night, aged 67 years. The deceased lived at Delaware, Ohio, and had been in the habit of frequently visiting his children in this county and while on his last visit here his health gradually grew worse, lingering for several months with the result above state. Mr. Hubbell had been a prominent politician for many years, having been elected from Delaware County to the state Legislature a number of years ago, which body elected him as their Speaker. He was afterward elected to Congress from his district and served two terms in that official capacity. He was a man of many brilliant attainments and in public life he made a splendid record. The deceased leaves two sons and three daughters to mourn his departure, beside a host of friends and relatives. Hubbell, James R. -- Friday. Hon. James R. Hubbell, whose death at Bellville was mentioned in this paper yesterday, was the father-in-law of James I. Geddes, of this city, also the father-in-law of Lemon Geddes, deceased, the eldest son of Judge Geddes. Another daughter of Mr. Hubbell was Miss Frank Hubbell who is well known in this city, now married to a son of Gen. Benj. R. Hubbell, James Randolph -- James Randolph Hubbell was born in Delaware, Ohio, June 17, 1850. Died in Milford, Neb., Jan. 26, 1894, aged 43 years, 7 months and 9 days. He was joined in holy matrimony to Miss Marcellas Aungst in Bellville, Ohio, Sept. 17, 1881. There was born to them 5 children, 2 sons and 3 daughters, all of whom are living. They have lived in Milford and vicinity for 3 years. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias in good standing, up to his death. He has held several important positions under the auspices of our government. He was in the Revenue service, and in the engraving department some four years. He was attacked with la grippe about six weeks prior to his death. He has suffered with bronchitis for a number of years, which was the cause of his death, finally terminating in capillary bronchitis. He leaves a wife and five children to mourn his loss. May God's blessing rest upon them. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. F. Deal at the residence. Mr. Hubbell was a kind and loving father, an affectionate husband, a good neighbor, and a patriotic citizen; he was followed to the grave by a large number of friends. Rest in peace. Huber, Henry -- Henry Huber, aged 70 years, died at his home, 246 North Main Street, Tuesday. Mr. Huber leaves three sons, Jacob, Charles and John, and two daughters, Mrs. Mary Smith, of this city, and Mrs. Margaret Hauch, of Oklahoma. A short funeral service was conducted at the house by the Rev. F. Huber, John G. -- John G. Huber died at his home, No. 81 East First Street, at 1 o'clock, Saturday morning. The deceased, who was more than 74 years of age, had suffered two strokes of apoplexy and this is supposed to have caused death. Mr. Huber was about town Wednesday and was apparently in as good health as usual, so that his demise was rather unexpected. Mr. Huber was born near Wittenberg, Germany, and came to the United States about the year 1846. He first settled at Zoar, in Tuscarawas County, but shortly removed to Mansfield. Later he was married to Miss Minnie Bountie, in this city. The deceased learned his trade, that of blacksmith, in a building which was formerly located where the residence of George Peter Ackerman is at present, on South Main Street. Mr. Huber did not follow this trade much, preferring to work with horses and he was a teamster for years. Mrs. Huber preceded her husband to the better land 11 weeks ago. There are six living children, William, Thomas, John, Henry and Miss Minnie Huber, of this city, and Albert Huber, of Galion. Two daughters, Lizzie and Alice, died some years ago. Huber, Mrs. John -- Monday. Mrs. John Huber, wife of the janitor of the city prison, died at her home on Newman Street, at 9 o'clock last night. The death, which was caused by an abscess in the head, is doubly sad from the fact that eight children, ranging in ages from seven months to 14 years, are left motherless. The funeral services will take place from the family residence on Newman Street, at 1 o'clock tomorrow afternoon, the Rev. D.F. Huber, Mrs. John -- Mrs. John Huber died Saturday morning at 8 o'clock at her home, 81 East First Street, of neuralgia of the heart. Hudson, Alice J. Ferguson Oswalt -- 72, widow of D.Y. Hudson, of 176 Sturges Ave., died Tuesday at General Hospital shortly after being admitted. She had suffered a heart attack earlier at her home. She was born Oct. 13, 1892 on the Ferguson farm where the Sandy Hill Fruit Farm is now located. She was the daughter of James G. and Louisa Hiskey Ferguson. She was a member of the Central Methodist Church, Ruth Chapter 17, Order of Eastern Star, White Shrine of Jerusalem, Ohio State White Shrine Assn., Mansfield Knights temple Auxiliary, Baku Grotto Auxiliary; and a active member of the GOP Women of Richland County. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Frank Heitz of 653 Barnard Ave., and Mrs. Robert Ward of 44o Woodhill Dr., Ashland; one son, David H. Oswalt of Washington, D.C.; seven grandchildren and one brother, Kenneth W. Ferguson of Mansfield. The body was removed to the Wappner Funeral Home where services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, conducted by her pastor, the Rev. Wilbur B. Meiser. Burial will be in the Franklin Cemetery. Hudson, D.Y. -- Dies In Lodi - Desylvia Yoder Hudson, 80, of 176 Sturges Ave., died Saturday afternoon at the Lodi Community Hospital after suffering a heart attack near Lodi while he and his wife were traveling to Akron. Born Dec. 8, 1883 at Chardon, Mr. Hudson lived here since 1902. He was agent for the Wells Fargo Co. in the city from 1902 until 1918 and served as an assistant superintendent of receiving at Westinghouse for 32 years. Mr. Hudson retired 12 years ago, but he assumed part-time duties at the YMCA. He was a member of the Central Methodist Church, a Republican Party member worker and a charter member and past secretary of the Retmens Club. Hudson belonged to many Masonic Lodges, including: Mansfield Lodge No. 35, F & AM; Mansfield Chapter No. 94, R I S M; Mansfield Commandery No. 21 K T of which he was past commander; Holy Royal Arch Knight Templar priests of Akron; Baku Grotto Scottish Rite of Dayton; Al Koran Shrine Club of Cleveland; Richland County Scottish Rite Assn; Mansfield Shrine and Scottish Rite Clubs; the Masonic Veterans Assn. of Ohio, and the Grand Council of Knight Masons of Dublin, Ireland. He is survived by: his wife, Mrs. Alice Oswalt Hudson: two step-daughters, Mrs. Frank Heitz, of 653 Barnard Ave., and Mrs. Robert Ward, of Ashland; a son, Dave H. Oswalt of Washington D.C.; two sisters, Mrs. Francis Balliett, of 397 Glessner Ave., and Mrs. Pearl Brown, of 802 Maple St., and seven grandchildren. Huess Children -- As Undertaker Wappner drove up to the residence of Charles Huess, on Glessner Avenue, at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon, to inter the remains of Mr. Huess' two children, who had died of diphtheria within 12 hours, the third child, an eight-years-old boy, who has been suffering from the most malignant type of the disease died. The funeral for the last child was held at the family residence at 2 o'clock this afternoon. It is a very severe blow to Mr. and Mrs. Huess to lose three of their children from the same disease within 24 hours. The first one, a boy, died Monday evening at 7 o'clock and at 11 o'clock yesterday was followed by the little daughter, and the last one yesterday afternoon. Hueston, Mary Hursh -- Died, April 10th., 1867, in Pleasant Valley, Richland Co., O., Mrs. Mary Hursh Hueston, aged 61 years, 5 months and 17 days. Both of these deceased (along with Mrs. Anna Birks Swigart) were members of the Lutheran Church nearly fifty years, and adorned their profession by a consistent life, affectionate neighbors, devoted wives and mothers, and both of them leave large, intelligent, well raised families and many friends to mourn their departure. Huff, Margaret -- Bellville. Mrs. Margaret Huff, who died Oct. 2nd., was 83 years, 4 months and 15 days old. She was born in York County, Pa., 1799, and came to Ohio in 1830; was the mother of seven children, five of whom are living; joined the Presbyterian church at the age of fourteen years and became a member of the Salem Lutheran church in 1837. Huff, Nora -- Neighbors of Mrs. Nora Huff, who resided all alone on Nicholas Avenue, became alarmed Thursday morning at not seeing her about as usual and made an investigation about 8:30 o'clock, with the result that she was found lying on the kitchen floor, tight up against a door which led to the outside. Fortunately the door was unlocked and with much effort the door was opened, which revealed the fact that the lady had suffered a stroke. A physician was summoned but she died within a half hour after being found. Undertaker Miller took charge of the body which later in the day was removed to the home of her brother, Henry Clapper, on Trux Street, and later will be taken to Wakeman, her old home, for burial. Huffman, Lee -- Lee Huffman, aged 22 months, son of Geo. I. Huffman, who resides on Water, north of Bloom Street, was drowned in a cistern on the property occupied by Policeman Ferguson Friday afternoon at about 4 o'clock. The child was playing with other children in the Huffman yard but strayed away. The mother missed him and in her search noticed that the stone cap to the cistern was removed. Fancy her horror on looking in to see the child's clothing. She gave an alarm but before he could be rescued life was extinct. [Mansfield Herald: 14 October 1886]

Huffman, Robert -- Robert Huffman Spent Days in Distress When Riches Awaited Him -- Heart Broken Sister Comes for Remains -- That Robert Huffman, who died Thursday morning in the Hallam House without funds, could have lived in ease and luxury if he had so desired was made known last night when Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Patterson arrived from Shiloh, Ohio to arrange for the burial. Mrs. Patterson is an only sister of the deceased, and she is reputed to be worth several millions. Tearfully last night she stated that she had been seeking her brother for over twenty years and that her husband had made three trips to California in search of him. Once word came that her brother was in a mining town in Nevada, and Mr. Patterson hurried there, only to find that his brother-in-law had gone to Montana. Later, news came that he was again in California, and upon the arrival of Mr. Patterson, he found that the object of his search had left previous to his coming and had left no trace. Giving up the search, he returned to Ohio. Robert Huffman was born of wealthy parents and upon their death inherited a fortune which he quickly lost in unwise speculation. Never having learned a trade, it was necessary for him to earn his living at common labor. Too proud to ask aid of his more fortunate sister, he was content to wander about the West working as a laborer, when a good home was awaiting him in Ohio. The news of his death was received by Mrs. Patterson last Thursday and she at once took train for this city, arriving here last night. Late last night no arrangements had been made for the funeral. The remains will probably be shipped to Ohio. Robert Huffman was born in Ohio sixty five years ago. He came to California in 1868 and from that time left the state only at intervals. He never returned to his own home in Ohio. His only surviving relative is the sister, Mrs. Hulda Patterson. Aug 14, 1910. Submitted by Susan. The Thursday preceding is Aug 11. This article is purported to be from a Portland, Oregon newspaper. On speaking with two surviving grandchildren of Huldah, Esther and Martha, the story provided much amusement regarding the rumored millions that Huldah was worth. It was recalled that Huldah and James said they sure wished they knew where these millions were. Although Huldah had some of her own money, perhaps from her never married aunts and uncles, one of whom was "California" John Patterson, her mother died young, and her father and other relatives were farmers. Her father had a second family, and died a farmer in Kansas. The houses that remain, where Huldah grew up and then moved across a country road to marry and raise a family, and the lifestyle that the family maintained, indicate that they were not poor, but neither were they any where near millionaires. The two homes are in the NE part of Butler Township, Richland County, on Noble Rd, west of Townline, about five miles west of Savannah. According to the Patterson Family Bible, Robert was born 22 August 1845. After his mother's death in 1849, he and his sister were raised by their grandparents, Robert and Nancy (Freeborn) Patterson, and their father remarried, eventually moving to Kansas. Susan Hopkins. Huggins, John B. -- Captain John B. Huggins, a well known traveling man, died at his room in the Tracy & Avery house on Main street, Saturday evening at 7:00 after an illness of three weeks with typhoid malaria. He was a true gentleman in every sense of that term; his friends were legion and his untimely death was received with deepest grief by all who knew him. Though it was known that he was quite ill, it was not realized that his illness was so serious as it proved to be. Mr. Huggins was born in Glasgow, Scotland, July 19, 1871, a son of Mr. & Mrs. William Beers Huggins. In 1882 he came to the United States and to this city with other members of the family. He attended the Mansfield public schools and later was a student at the Ohio State University at Columbus. For awhile he was in the newspaper business, being a reporter for the MANSFIELD HERALD, the NEWS and the SHIELD. In 1893 Mr. Huggins organized Co. M., Eighth regiment O.N.G., was its first captain and the company was largely equipped at his own expense. It was a great disappointment to the company when Nov. 1, 1893, he resigned the captaincy, owing to having entered upon work which would take him from the city. He was on the state for some time and for several years was a member of the Byrnes Bros' 8 Bells company. About a year and a half before the Spanish American war broke out, Mr. Huggins again joined his old company, this time as a private, but early in 1898 he was elected to the position of first sergeant, succeeding First Sergeant Ben Sloane. He served with the company during the war and while the regiment was at Camp Alger, Virginia, he went to Eldrid, Pa., where he was united in marriage with Miss Bertha Guldin, who survives him. The marriage was kept a secret for some time. While in Cuba, Mr. Huggins was very ill with fever and on the transport, returning from Cuba he became worse with malarial fever and for some time at Montauk Point he was in a critical condition. A more accommodating friend could not be found than was "Jack" Huggins and the boys of Co. M are always telling of this kindness, Genial, wholesouled, he always brought sunshine and cheer and was beloved by all. For some time past he has been a commercial traveler for Landers, Frary & Clark, of New Britain, Conn. He has also been connected with the Holly Manufacturing company, of Lakeville, Conn. He has for sometime made Mansfield his headquarters of late, but his home was at New Haven, Conn. Mrs. Huggins was with him during his last illness, as was also his brother, Fred, who came the latter part of the week. The typhoid malaria was greatly complicated with chronic diarrhea contracted in Cuba. He was a member of Venus Lodge, No. 152, F.& A.M. Mr. Huggins was a brother of William J. The remains were removed to the home of Mr. & Mrs. Charles S. Williams, on Blymyer avenue, where the funeral services were held this afternoon at 2:00, conducted by the Rev. A.B. Putnam, pastor of Grace Episcopal Church, of which the deceased was a member. Co. Hughes, (Mother) -- Newville. Mother Hughes passed away Tuesday evening, March 27, being 17 days past 76 years old. She was among the oldest citizens of Newville. She will be buried at Newville, where her husband and son are laid to rest. Both the latter served in the late rebellion. She leaves one son at home and several children married. Mr. Hull was born in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, March 8th., 1804; was married to Catharine Snyder, June 10th., 1828. the aged couple have therefore lived together 63 years. Deceased has been a member of the Disciple church for 40 years. There were born t them 10 children, 7 of whom are living; 43 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. Hull, Marvin -- A fast B.&O. train going through Butler at 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon collided with a freight train that was backing up, and a very serious accident resulted taking the life of one man and injuring many others. The freight train was almost totally demolished and thousands of dollars worth of merchandise destroyed. Mr. Marvin Hull, said to be a local man, succumbed to injuries resulting from the accident, dying shortly after the incident occurred. The blame of the accident has not been placed yet, but it is hoped that an investigation will soon be held, and that the negligent parties will be discovered. Hull, Mrs. J.D. -- BUTLER -- Mrs. J.D. Hull, aged 60 years, died at her home two miles south of Butler, Friday, her malady being heart trouble and dropsy. Mrs. Hull was formerly the widow of the late John Filloon, who many years ago was killed at Hemlock Falls by falling over the rocks. Humbert, Clyde -- Clyde Humbert, aged 23 years, a well known and respected young farmer of Butler township, Richland County, died at 8 o'clock, Monday night from the result of fearful injuries sustained by falling on a pitchfork. Mr. Humbert was engaged last Friday in moving a part of the roof off his barn. When the roof was being taken off to slide onto the wagon it was too heavy for him and shoved him off the vehicle. Humbert, Frank S. -- CRESTLINE - Frank S. (Hummy) Humbert, 62, of 50 Meadowwood Estates, died Wednesday night at his trailer at Clear Fork Lake of a heart attack. He was born in Mansfield on March 20, 1911 and he was a sign painter and artist. He also formerly operated "Hummy's Snack Shack" in Crestline. He had been a power boat racer. He was a member of the Crestline Arcanca Lodge 272 of F and AM; Crestline Chapter 88 of RAM; Mansfield Council 94, Mansfield Commandery 21; Scottish Rite, Valley of Columbus and the Mansfield Area Sign Assn. Mr. Humbert was also a member of the Crestline Lions Club, the Crestline Booster Club and was active in the Soap Box Derby since its inception, being cited by the Fun Center Soap Box Derby Hall of Fame in 1973. He attended the First Presbyterian Church in Crestline. He is survived by his wife, Eilleen. Services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church on Saturday at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Charles Rominger. Burial will be in Mansfield Cemetery. Humbert, Russel F.—Mansfield. Russell F. Humbert, 75, of 198 Rowland Ave. died in Crestwood Care Center in Shelby Friday afternoon following a long illness. Mr. Humbert was born in Franklin Township Nov. 1, 1903, and lived in the Mansfield are his entire life. He retired from Wickes Lumber Co. in 1969 following 20 years of service. He was an elder emeritus of the First Christian Church. He is survived by his wife, Maxine White Humbert; one brother, John of Ashland; and one sister, Mrs. Harold Reynold of Mansfield. Funeral service will be held in the First Christian Church Monday at 10 a.m. by the pastor, Dr. William C. Newman. Private burial will be in Shenandoah Cemetery. Hume, Elizabeth (Guise) -- Died, on the 6th. inst., Mrs. Elizabeth Hume, aged 83 years, 1 month and 1 day. The subject of this sketch was born in Perry Co., Pa., November 5th., 1805. Her maiden name was Elizabeth Guise. She was married to George Hume A.D. 1830, and was the mother of four children; of which one only survives her. Three brothers and two sisters, all aged is left behind. She came to Ohio in the spring of 1848 and settled in Coshocton County, residing in that county two years, when she moved with her family to Bellville, where she resided until her death. She was a member of the "Seventh Day Adventist Church" the tenets of which church she was a firm believer and died in the full hope and faith of a glorious resurrection in Christ. Humphrey, Clem V. -- Clem V. Humphrey was born near Ankenytown and died at his home near Bellville last Friday, after a short illness of kidney trouble, and apoplexy since Monday of last week. He was a very robust man and the news of his death was a shock to the community. Mr. Humphrey leaves a wife and eight children, six boys and two girls to mourn the loss of a husband and father. Humphrey, "Grandmother" -- Walnut Hill. Grandmother Humphrey departed this life on the 1st. day of this month. She having arrived to the ripe age of 80 years, 10 months and 29 days. She connected herself with the church, denominated as the Mennonites at the early age of 15 years, and it is said that she lived an exemplary Christian life being largely possessed with the qualities of forbearance, forgiveness and meekness. Humphryes, John Jr. -- The sad news was received here today of the death at New Orleans of John Humphryes, Jr., secretary and treasurer of the Humphryes Manufacturing Co., of this city. The death occurred at 3:50 this morning, the immediate cause being pulmonary trouble. Last October M. and Mrs. Humphryes left this city for Albuquerque, New Mexico, with the hope of improving the former's health. For a time after his arrival there his health improved. Later he moved from Albuquerque to Las Cruces and hence to El Paso, Texas. The rainy season at the latter place made him hope to seek the soothing air of Asheville, N.C. for which place they started last week. It seems that they only got as far as New Orleans, when the journey was abandoned and the invalid was compelled to take to his bed, from which he was not to rise. For several years the deceased's health had been bad. Hard work, close application to a growing and prosperous industry, made so by his own pluck and ability, had impaired a strong constitution and he sought the best medical talent available. He was, in many respects, a remarkable business man, thoroughly conversant with every branch of the iron business. In industrial matters he was authority and in all enterprises in which the city was concerned he was a prominent and important factor, being untiring and resourceful. Mr. Humphryes came here about ten years ago from Salem, O., and organized the Manufacturing Company bearing his name, which, with the addition of new illness, is now probably the largest industry in the city. He was a native of New York state, was about 45 years old and leaves a wife and two children, John and Robert. Arrangements have not been made for the funeral and they will be announced later. Humphryes, Johnnie -- Johnnie Humphryes died at his home on Park Avenue West, at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon from the effects of the injuries received by being run over by his cousin's bicycle while coasting down Bowman Street hill Wednesday afternoon. The deceased was a bright boy of 12 years and his untimely death is a sad blow to his widowed mother, who is thus deprived of her eldest son, and her friends deeply sympathize with her in her bereavement. Hunt, 184 (possibly 181) Sturges Avenue, under the auspices of Mansfield Lodge, No. 19, I.O.O. F., of which the deceased was for many years a member. Mr. Hunt was born in Hagerstown, Pa., and came to Mansfield about 60 years ago. He would have been 78 years old tomorrow. He was a brickmaker and had his first brickyard near the present Catholic school building, since which he had brick kilns in a number of places in and near the city. Mr. Hunt served one term as city Marshal, in 1865 and 1866, two terms as constable and two terms as township trustee. His surviving children are: George W., James W., John B. and Perry E. She would have been 82 yrs of age had she lived until March 5th. next. Her maiden name was Letty Downs, a daughter of Mr.. and Mrs.. James Downs, and she was born between Lexington and Bellville. she was married to John Hunt and to them were born eight children, of whom five sons and one daughter survive. The sons are Ephraim, James and George of this city; William hunt of Orrville, California; Charles hunt of Saint Albans, Vest Virginia; and the daughter Mrs. Mary Van Dorn formerly married to Harry Sutherland, son of Dr. Alexander Sutherland of this city. Hunt, who for long years was a resident of this place, and who with her husband and family moved to Michigan some fifteen or more years ago, died at the family home in Cadillac, Mich., Wednesday morning, Jan. 20, at 7:30 o'clock. The remains were brought here over the B.&O. on No. 17 Thursday forenoon and taken to the home of her sister, Mr. & Mrs. Chas. Waite, of Broadway. Funeral services were held from the Lutheran Church Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, interment being made in the family burial lot in Greenlawn Cemetery. Hunt, Linthia Lockwood -- Linthia Lockwood Hunt was born in Brandon, Knox Co., Ohio, May 7th., 1840, and passed away Jan. 20, 1915, aged 74 years, 8 months and 13 days. She was united in marriage to John Hunt in 1858. Five children blessed this union, two of whom died in infancy. In 1862 they came to Plymouth, where they resided until their removal to Petosky, some twenty years ago, where they engaged in the hotel business. Their home for the past three years has been with their children, Mr. & Mrs. Carroll, of Grand Rapids, Mich. She united with the English Lutheran church in 1874, during the pastorate of Rev. Geo. Miller. She remained faithful to her early vows and to her church. She was a devoted mother and a true friend. While on a visit to her children, Mr. & Mrs. Chas. Hunt, of Cadillac, Mich., she laid aside life's burdens, and peacefully entered the Beyond, leaving a husband, 3 daughters -- Mrs. A.L. Fennimore of Petosky, Mich., Mrs. C. Hunt of Cadillac, Mich., Mrs. John Carroll of Grand Rapids, Mich., four grandchildren, one sister - Mrs. Chas. Waite of Plymouth, and a large circle of friends to mourn her departure. She was buried from her church home, services being conducted by Dr. John Hall of Mansfield. Hunt, Lucile E. - Shelby - Lucile E. Hunt, 80, of 162 Leslie Land died Monday evening in Crestwood Care Center in Shelby. She was born march 13, 1910, near Berlin Heights, Ohio, to Arthur and Inex Shoup Hunt. Miss Hunt was a former employee of the Ohio Seamless Tube Company for 15 years and the U.S. Air Force for 20 years. She moved to Shelby at the age of 10 and was a graduate of Shelby High School and the Ohio State University. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church, the Shelby American Association of Retired Persons and the Shelby Womens club. Surviving are several cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, mary Crawford Hess, in 1984. Calling hours are tonight from 7 to 9 at the Turner Funeral Home, where services will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. by her pastor, Dr. Carl L. Johnson. Hunter, Anna -- Died, Miss Anna Hunter, daughter of Robert Hunter, deceased, passed away from earth to a better world on the 1st. inst., in the twenty-third year of her age. That fell destroyer, consumption, marked her some months ago, but "death loves a shining mark". She yielded to its withering blight, but in doing so, found death's sting, removed. Among her last acts was to make a profession of Him who had robbed the grave of its victory, and then she commenced with God's people in her sick room, on the banks of the river. She still lives in the hearts of a widowed mother, bereaved brother and sister, who sorrow not as those who have no hope. She lives before the great white throne. Hunter, Charles Samuel -- Rome. Charles Samuel Hunter was born one half mile north of Rome on March 27, 1841, and died Dec. 4, 1908, aged 67 years, 7 months and 8 days. He leaves a wife and two sons and two daughters, Grover C. and Bart of Cleveland, Mrs. Arch Kirkpatrick, of Galion, and Miss Florence of Shelby. Mr. Hunter was one of the leading citizens of our little city, having resided here nearly all his life. He was one of our pioneer school masters, having taught for forty years straight and in nearly all of the schools in the northern part of the county. He quit teaching about 15 years ago on account of poor health. He has probably been in public office longer than any man in the state, being constable several terms and justice of the peach for almost thirty nine years, which office he held at the date of his death. The deceased was well liked by everybody who knew him and will be greatly missed from our midst. Our earnest sympathy is extended to his bereft wife and children. Funeral services were held Sunday at the Presbyterian church by Rev. B.F. Morris being attended by one of the largest congregations ever in our town. Interment in Presbyterian cemetery. Hunter, Clarinda Hedges -- Thursday. A telegram received in this city this morning announces the death of Mrs. Clarinda Hedges Hunter, at her home in Tiffin. The deceased was a daughter of Josiah Hedges, who laid out the first plat of Tiffin, and an aunt of Dr. J.S. Hedges and W.C. Hedges, of this city. Mrs. Hunter was 90 years of age, and was one of the oldest residents of Tiffin. Hon. Henry C. Hedges and Major J.S. She had been a resident of Mansfield a little over two years. She was a member of the O.E.S. of Mansfield and a member of the Presbyterian church of Rome, Ohio. She is survived by her husband and three children, Leotta, Dortha and Troas, all at home. Two children preceded her in death. She also leaves three sisters, Mrs. Lennie Starr of Shenandoah, Mrs. Birtie Geisinger of Ganges and Mrs. Stlla Cox of Lima. Hunter, Mrs. E. H. -Word was received in this city this morning of the death of Mrs. E. H. Hunter in the hospital at Toledo. She died there yesterday morning and the remains will be brought back to Shelby for burial. They will be brought to Vernon and from there taken to the home of Arthur White on Oak street from whose home the funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The Rev. A. E. Winter, the pastor of the Methodist church, will officiate. The deceased was the daughter of Jackson White and was a sister of Mrs. J.C. Forbes, Mrs. Will Heisner and Arthur White, of this city. Huntsman, Frederick F. -- Frederick F. Huntsman, 96, of Mansfield died Monday, Sept. 11, 2000, at Oak Grove Manor after a brief illness. Mr. Huntsman was born June 25, 1904 in Clarksburg, West Virginia, residing in the Mansfield area for 40 years. He was the former owner of Coolridge Golf Club and a former member of PGA. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Frederick Jr. and Gerry Huntsman of Lady Lake, Florida; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; and two stepsons. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Elsie Virginia Huntsman; one son, William David Huntsman; one brother; three sisters and his second wife Margaret Mae. Huntsman, James W. -- James W. Huntsman, a well-known and respected citizen of Perry township died Jan. 23, aged 87 years 8 months and 18 days. He was a son of Jonathan and Nancy (Wherry) Huntsman and the last of the family of nine children. Jonathan came from Washington County, Pa. to Perry County in 1816 and entered land in section 22, which he cleared and lived on till death. James W. was born May 5m1824, and was reared on the old homestead farm in Perry township. During the winter months of his boyhood he perused his studies in a subscription school, walking one and a half miles to the schoolhouse which was a log structure with a dirt floor and greased paper windows. He remained with his parents until he attained the age of twenty-five when he entered the harness maker's trade, working at the same in Woodbury ,Morrow County, for six years when he returned to the home farm and resumed work and in 1859 moved on the farm on which he died. Mr. Huntsman proved to his country when in 1864 he offered services to the government, enlisting as a member of Company B,163rd L.V.I. in the 2nd day of May and served until he was honorably discharged. He married June 7,1859 to Catherine Baker who died March 25,1883. To them three children were born, Warren A. of Oregon, Mo., Lyden R. and Charles A.. Warren and Charles are still living. Lyndon passed away Nov. 22,1903.Jan. 2, 1884 he married Amanda M. Amos. Three children were born to this marriage, Myrta ,Louie and John. The latter two of whom are living., Myrta passed away Aug. 6, 1903. He leaves a wife, four children and nine grandchildren to mourn his departure. Huntsman, Mary A. -- Pleasant Hill. Mary A. Huntsman, sister of Mrs. John Huntsman, died March 7th., aged 15 years, 4 months and 10 days. Her illness was a lingering one; a subject of consumption. Her gentle disposition had won the hearts of all who knew her, and the uncomplaining manner during her illness commanded the sympathy of her friends and acquaintances, who with loving hearts and willing hands, endeavored to contribute to her comfort, until the Lord claimed her as his own. After long and severe suffering she quietly fell asleep in Jesus. Hursh, Mrs. Joel -- Mrs. Joel Hursh, an aged and respected lady of Monroe township, died at her residence two miles South of Lucas, last Friday morning, of inflammation of the bowels. Her remains were interred in the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Lucas on Saturday. If we recollect rightly three of her sons when to Kansas only a few weeks ago. He leaves a wife, five daughters and one son, James E HUSTED. Mr. HUSTED was born in Holmes county April 30 1827, and lived there a number of years. Later he lived in Michigan for some time. Huston, Abraham -- Pleasant Valley. Abraham Huston died March 12 at his home. He was born in this county, March 7, 1831. He was the eldest son of a family of nine children, three of whom, with his wife, survive him. He was a good neighbor, a kind brother and a devoted and affectionate husband. His horse became frightened at a passing locomotive, and as the old man was trying to pacify him, he was thrown out with the above result. He leaves a wife and a large family of grown children. Huston, Margaret – Mrs. Margaret Huston was born in this township and on the same farm she owns, Feb. 6, 1825, and has always lived in this township and on the same farm. She has never been absent from the township six weeks at one time. She is the oldest child of Thomas and Mary Thompson. Her father was born in Washington Co., Penn., Feb. 22, 1800; he came to this county Nov. 15, 1823, and lived here until his death, which occurred July 13, 1868; her mother died June 26, 1863; she was born May 22, 1799, in York Co., Penn; her maiden name was Mary Beaird; she was married, March, 1823, in Washington Co., Penn.; the same year, they removed to this county. Our subject’s sister, Miss Kezia Thompson, who owns the farm jointly with her, is the fourth child of Thomas and Mary Thompson; she was born May 22, 1831, on this farm also, and has always lived in the county and on the same farm. She lived a faithful, consistent Christian life and peacefully fell asleep in Jesus. She was a kind and affectionate wife, a loving and devoted mother, devoted to her church and family, denying self for their welfare. Her father, Dr. B.W. Chapman, of Bakersville, O., died last April. She was also connected by ties of blood with the Campbells so well known to everyone acquainted with the early history of the Disciples of Christ in this country. She leaves a husband and five children, who, with many friends, deeply feel their loss. She was a sufferer for a long time with that dreaded disease, consumption, yet was always patient and resigned, awaiting the end. And while she had many things to live for, surrounded by loving hearts, who deemed it a pleasure to contribute to her every comfort and enjoyment, yet she was ready to leave this tenement of clay and be with Christ, which is far better. The funeral, which was one of the largest ever witnessed in our city, occurred at the family residence on Broadway. The services were conducted by Elder C.F. Crites. Hyde, Martha Constance -- We regret to hear of the death of Miss Martha Hyde, youngest daughter of Wm. E. Hyde, of this city on Friday evening the 6th. inst. She was at the time of her death in her 18th. year. She was a most estimable young lady and beloved by all who knew her. Her funeral took place last Monday and her remains were followed to its last resting place by a large number of friends and schoolmates.
